Ajaccio [AJA]

Amsterdam [AMS]

The unique atmosphere of Amsterdam makes this city one of the best places to hang out. The capital city of the Netherlands is one of the most cosmopolitan and liberal cities in the world. For many decades this city has fascinated travellers, emigrants and non-conformists. Mix of different people, from various places, with diverse opinions and life-experiences, have given this place an unchangeable image. Amsterdam is a city of many contrasts. In the beautiful sceneries from the seventeenth century woven with the network of river canals (grachts), people live in the rhythm of the present. Even thought we are talking about a big city, everything is within one's reach. Vincent Van Gogh's museum, Madamme Tussaud's Wax Museum, or the house where Anna Frank's Jewish family was hiding during the Second World War. Although it is not one of the biggest European cities, it is inconquerable in many aspects: in its amount of flowers in the streets and parks, in the amount of bicycles, canals and bridges, or perhaps in the number of Rembrandt's paintings. For youngsters, Amsterdam is mainly a symbol of tolerance and fun. Whether we are talking about the well-known Red Light District, rumours coffee shops, or football of Ajax Amsterdam. Take a walk, hire a bicycle or board one of the numerous boats that cruise the wide grachts and experience the taste of life in this exquisite metropolis yourself.

Barcelona [BCN]

Barcelona has boomed since the early 1990s, when preparations for the Olympic Games wrenched it into modernity, and today it remains well in the vanguard of other Spanish cities in terms of prosperity, stability and cultural activity. It's a confident, progressive city, looking towards the rest of Europe for its inspiration and its innovations - the classic tourist images of Spain seem firmly out of place in Barcelona's bustling central boulevards and stylish modern streets. And style is what brings many visitors here, attracted by enthusiastic newspaper and magazine articles which make much of the outrageous architecture, user-friendly city design, agreeable climate and frenetic nightlife. Even the medieval Gothic quarter and its once-notorious red-light area have been swept up by the citywide renovation programme, which is still running at full tilt. Antoni Gaudí is the most famous of those who have left their mark on Barcelona in this way: his Sagrada Família cathedral is rightly admired, but just as fascinating are the (literally) fantastic houses and apartment buildings that he and his contemporaries designed. In art, too, the city boasts a stupendous legacy, from important Romanesque and Gothic works to major galleries containing the life's work of the Catalan artists Joan Miró and Antoni Tapies, and a representative collection of the work of Pablo Picasso. As the new millennium starts Barcelona has continued to blossom from provincial city to putative European capital. Surely, Barcelona is the city, which deserves your attention. Check it out!

It has an international airport named after the writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The ruins of Knossos, which were excavated and restored by Arthur Evans, are nearby. ´ As mentioned above, Iraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was the biggest centre of population on Crete. So it is very likely that there was a port here as long ago as 2000 BC. There is however no archaeological evidence for such a port. The present city of Iraklion was founded in 824 AD by the Saracens (an Arabic Muslim people). They built a giant ditch around the city for protection. They named the city Khandak, meaning 'moat', after the ditch. The Saracens allowed the port to be used as a safe haven for pirates, much to the annoyance of the nearby Byzantine Empire. In 961, the Byzantines attacked and defeated the city, slaughtered all the Saracens, looted the city and burned it to the ground. They remained in control of the rebuilt Khandak for the next 243 years. In 1204, the city was bought by the Venetians as part of a complicated political deal which involved among other things, the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade restoring the deposed Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelus to his throne. The Venetians improved on the ditch by building enormous fortifications, most of which are still in place, including a giant wall, in places up to 40m thick, with 7 bastions, and a fortress in the harbour. The name Khandak became Candia in Italian. The city retained the name of Candia for centuries, and the whole island of Crete was often called Candia as a result. After the Venetians came the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. They besieged the city for 22 years in a bloody war in which 30,000 Cretans and 120,000 Turks died. The Venetians eventually handed it over in 1669. The city was renamed during the Turkish occupation to Megalo Kastro (big castle). During their occupation, the harbour silted up, so they moved most of their business to Hania in the west of the island. The city only became truly Greek with the withdrawal of the Turks in 1898. At this stage, the Greeks decided to rename the city to something Greek, so they chose the name Iraklion, meaning City of Heracles (Hercules), after the port of Heracleum which had existed somewhere in the locality in Roman times. The biggest monument of the city is the Venetian medieval fortress Rocca al Mare located on the port.
